Dear Conservatives Who Want to Censor Everything You Don’t Like
I Know You’re Not Listening, But I’m Going to Write This Anyway
Grow up. Seriously.
You hate LGBTQ+ people, I understand that. You have absolutely no right to ban LGBTQ+ content just because you hate us. I for one want LGBTQ+ content available for my children, so that they know they have representation in media and culture. We exist whether you like us or not, and throwing a fit should get you ignored, not catered to. Most parents of toddlers know to ignore their temper tantrums, the same strategy might work for yours. I don’t ask for conservative bullshit to be taken out of libraries.
My oldest daughter is transgender. My youngest daughter is a lesbian. Your daughter is probably a bigot, but I’m going to let that go because she learned it from you, so it’s not her fault. At least I’m not terrified my children will become conservatives just because conservative books are in the library, but you have an irrational fear of your child having access to LGBTQ+ content why? You do understand that banning books is a great way to get kids to read them, right?
You claim that you think parents should have a choice in what their kids read, which is a lie because you don’t think people like me have the right to have a choice in what our kids read. Maybe everyone should just be glad that kids are reading. I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s not being allowed to read anything my parents considered bad, definitely not LGBTQ+ content. I read books about straight people doing straight people shit. For over thirty years. It still didn’t manage to rub off because no matter what effort was made to censor my reading, I am not straight because I wasn’t born straight.
I was an avid reader as a child, I read anything I was allowed to read, all of it boring and gag-worthy, because I loved to read and it was all I had. That is, until I got old enough to figure out how to smuggle books and music into my room, and what the good hiding spaces were. You won’t stop kids reading banned books, you’ll just make them sneaky. I’d rather have open conversations with my kids over the things they want to read and discuss than them having to hide it from me.
I am teaching my children how to think, not what to think, so that they can develop their own beliefs, opinions, passions, and hobbies. They are not my belongings and are not required to think like me because guess what? They aren’t me. They are themselves. I know that’s a difficult concept, but maybe when you grow up you’ll figure it out. Oh, am I being condescending? My bad. I’m not sorry.
My children are learning that the world is a diverse place, and that’s part of what makes it great. I’ve been forced to live in your world, and your world is boring as fuck. I want to give my kids the best life I can give them rather than force feeding them with sanitized books and articles with no sense of reality. Your idea of a perfect world is boring.
Those of you that can’t handle a little swearing, or gutter language, or street talk…
Grow up. Seriously. Grow the fuck up.
If you can’t handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. This is how some people speak, or express emotion, or whole host of other things. I find it interesting that you people can call liberals stupid sounding names you think are insulting, but can’t handle a couple of words you’ve decided you hate so that you can try to censor us.
There’s no need to lie and claim that swear words are aggressive, or disrespectful, because they aren’t. What is aggressive and disrespectful is your throwing fits to try to censor others. Most of us don’t live in your unrealistic, sanitized version of the world, we live in reality. Personally, I’d rather hear a few choice swear words than derogatory language towards minority groups.
While you get on your high horse and ride away into the sunset to your unrealistic utopia, I’ll be here working really fucking hard for the rights of other people to read whatever the fuck they want. Including your kids. We are done with your shit.
Was that enough swears for you? I know a lot more, and can use them if you like.
