December was a good month for me on Medium as I continue to learn how the platform works and as I interact with excellent writers. I can’t believe it took me so long to realize how it worked. I love the fact that there are people who actually want to read my stories.

It’s also interesting to me that my writing didn’t take off until I decided to buck the conventional wisdom of finding a niche. I started to just write what I want to write and that’s when I started to become interesting.

The funny thing about that is that there’s certain topics I write about more than others, which means the things I’m passionate about are what I write about. That turns into a niche in and of itself, but it came about naturally, not because I kept trying to come up with a niche.

In graduate school, my concentration was in creative nonfiction, which is the main genre I write in. It is also my favorite genre to read. I write the things that I would like to read on Medium, because I figure there are other people who want to read the same kinds of things as me.

Two of my favorite creative nonfiction writers on Medium
