Head Coverings Aren’t Just For Conservative Women Trapped In Patriarchal Structures

The reasons I made the choice to cover even though I’m wild

The reasons I now wear head coverings are complex, but it’s something that I’m actually enjoying. It’s a long story and it’s a story that might not be over yet. There might be new chapters of the head covering story that God and I have not written yet.

Each person’s head wrapping journey is their own, and most of us have very different reasons for doing so. I was required to wear head coverings at certain churches when I was growing up, and any kind of headcoverings from hijabs, to tichels, to hats seemed conservative to me and I wasn’t interested.

Many women around the world are required to do whatever a man tells them to do with their hair, and so head covering is often seen as something that is inherently conservative and patriarchal. I felt that way at first, especially because I grew up in Christian fundamentalist circles.

This makes the issues surrounding head covering fraught with emotion, with people having very strong feelings, which is why I want to make it clear from the beginning that this is my personal story, and as such is not prescriptive for any other…
