I am devoting most of my time to Substack and less to Medium now. I am not putting anything behind a pay wall, though. I have a better percentage of views and followers there because they are email followers.
I have subscriptions turned on in case someone wants to contribute that way, but with the understanding that all my stories are free. One of my friends pays because she can well afford it and she wants to support me. Another person pays because she believes if she's getting the benefits she wants from my writing that I'm worth being paid.
What pisses me off about Substack is being unable to go lower than $5 a month. If I asked for $2 a month, I know a few people that would do that because it wouldn't really put them out much. It's only $24 a year as opposed to $60.
I've come to accept that I'm not going to make money writing, and since that's not my primary objective, I'm going to write where people appreciate it which so happens to not be Medium. I'll still try to publish here once or twice a week, but one of those articles is likely to be the same as one of my Substack ones.
Those who truly need to read my work aren't the kind that have the means to pay the fee on Medium either. I'd like to have those that believe in my mission pay if they want to, but not count on it.
That's just what works for me and my goals. It's different for others.
