I think it depends in many ways, at least for me. I utterly refuse to listen to any of P. Diddy's music because of who he is and what he's done, but then again I'm a victim of trafficking. J. K. Rowling is currently doing active harm. Long after she's dead I think Harry Potter will be less problematic for some people.

Sometimes knowing who someone was puts their work in a different perspective with a new way of understanding. I always hated "Alice in Wonderland" but the story makes slightly more sense knowing that Lewis Carroll wrote it as a story for an eight-year-old girl named Alice that he was grooming.

Russell Brand is an asshole with or without his work. Cormac McCarthy has now been exposed as someone who trafficked a teenage girl who was his muse.

I have things that are non-negotiable for me, and other things that aren't. Some can divorce artists from their work, others can't. I think each person needs to do what's best for them.

This was a great article.
