I've been homeless before, and it's a cruel world. I think you have done well. I always tell people to give directly to the person rather than to "charity." Last week I had no cash, but I did have a Walmart gift card with $9 left on it. I gave it to a homeless man and told him to buy whatever made him feel better today. I gave it to him because the Walmart was right there and it was all I had.
