Schools do this too and what always frustrated me was that the only protein I could afford to feed my kids consistently was peanut butter. I argued that not only was the allergic child not in any of their classes but that it's unreasonable for them to expect other children to go hungry. I was told that it's not hard to feed them something else. I asked them if they were going to pay for it and was shut down with "my decision is final I do not let parents run my school." I tried to point out that they were allowing the parents of the nut allergic kid to do that and they said they made their decision and if they found out my kids didn't have a lunch they would call CPS.
