NICHES | PERSONAL WRITING | CALLING
Some Things Can’t Be Sanitized
My writing is rough around the edges
When I first started writing on Medium, nicheless was the way to go. At least, that’s what everyone said. It was sound advice at the time, and I’m glad I followed it. It worked for me, until it didn’t. Since it’s no longer working for me, I think I might be joining Club Niche.
Over the past year of writing, I’ve noticed that I naturally gravitate to the same topics. I have spent a lot of time discerning what God might want me to do. I’ve come to see that having a niche isn’t bad at all. The main problem with niches I think is when we try to force them rather than let them develop naturally.
The writing advice out there is endless and really is mostly geared towards extroverts and the kinds of articles I don’t write. All this shit about personal branding is pure marketing and while I think it’s somewhat important, I don’t think personal stories can be branded and marketed exactly.
Doing that changes the entire vibe of my work, which I realize is a branding decision on my part. The difference is again it’s something that happened naturally.
My point is, personal writing is different and talking about “content creation” and “monetizing” actually…
