The point you made about only being a Christian to get out of hell and to go to heaven is a point I make all the time to people. I'm a Christian because I love Jesus and want to follow him. Following Jesus is supposed to change us in the here and now and if it doesn't, that's a problem. Heaven and hell or whatever have absolutely no influence on my decision to follow Jesus. If it did, that would be a problem.
