Why I Spend More Time Elsewhere

Medium doesn’t seem to be a profitable platform anymore

If you really like and want to keep up with my work, you should probably subscribe to my Substack, as I spend a whole lot more time there these days. Subscriptions there are free, and you get three stories a week.

I’m not charging for my writing on Substack, but people can purchase a paid subscription if they want to. It might seem odd that I’d spend more time on a platform where I essentially work for free rather than Medium where I get paid peanuts.

The rationale behind that is that I have 36 subscribers on Substack, and on Medium I have 18 subscribers out of 1,073 followers. My average amount of views on Medium is about 22 per story, as opposed to 25 on Substack.

On Substack, my emails are read at a rate of 30% or so, which is much higher than here. 25 views out of 36 subscribers is pretty good, and I do get traffic from Facebook that I don’t with Medium. I’m not sure why, it seems people I know personally would rather read on Substack than Medium.

Three out of 26 subscribers on Substack are paid subscriptions even though they do not get any extra content for doing so. They do it because they appreciate my work and think I ought to be paid. So despite the fact that I don’t give them bonus…
