Woah. Great essay. I joined a gang simply because I had to survive in a cruel world as a homeless teenager who had escaped the abuse of home. Kids don't join gangs for no reason, and you're right on target with your assessment. I've written several of my gang stories, and about youth homelessness, and this essay is one of the best from my perspective of one who has been through this sort of thing.
